Overview
The Summer School is dedicated to the analysis and close examination of Family and Care Policies in contemporary Europe in a comparative perspective. Specific attention will be devoted  to the relationship between social and demographic shifts,  families structures and labour market transformations and public policies adjustment processes. The Summer School is organized in five modules, each of them focusing on a specific aspect or segment of family and care policies. In the mornings students will attend to lectures given by European scholars from various social policies fields. In the afternoon attendants will have the opportunity to present their PhD or research projects and to discuss them collectively with other participants and scholars. One module (morning and afternoon) is completely devoted to the description and use of SHARE data for policy analysis.

Organizers and scientific coordinators
The Summer School is organized and supervised by Costanzo Ranci (Politecnico di Milano) and Manuela Naldini (University of Turin).

Where and when
Milan, Politecnico di Milano, Campus Leonardo, 23-28 September 2011. The Politecnico di Milano will host the Italian Espanet Conference 2011 that will take place at the same venue from September 29th to 1st October 2011.

Working Language
Lectures will be held in English.

A reading list will be provided to the Summer School attendants by the beginning of July 2011.

Participants
European PhD  and Master students in the field of social policies. Researchers and social policy analysts are also invited to apply.  
The Summer School will take place with a minimum of 14 participants.
Attendants will be asked to present a paper, an extended abstract or a research project connected to one of the topics proposed during the Summer School to be discussed collectively.

Application
Applications must be done by email. Applicants are kindly asked to submit:

  • their CV
  • a short description of their PhD project or of their actual research work (no longer than 800 words)
  • a letter of recommendation from their supervisor if Master or PhD. students

Admissions to the Summer School are closed. Applicants will be contacted directly from the staff of the Politecnico di Milano. Infos will be provided by mail.

Course Fee
Euros 300.  Payment details will provided in the next months.
Accommodation, meals and travel costs are not included. The Summer School staff have organized a convenient accommodation solution for attendants in the center of Milan at the cost of Euros 35/day at the Residenza Galilei (one of the Politecnico’s  residence) for single rooms  (bathroom shared between two rooms) with internet and refrigerator. Cooking common facilities are available as well as a self service (Euros 10/ meal). The booking deadline is the same as the deadline for applications.
