Health inequalities are an important concern in our society and are a crucial issue with which healthcare policies are confronted with. Traditional health inequalities, due to class, age, ethnicity, etc., are increasingly complemented by new inequalities, produced by the institutional design of the healthcare systems, e.g. in terms of the inequality of access, in treatment, etc.
For this very reason, it becomes increasingly important to understand how this issue is addressed by different health policies and by different health systems, both with regard to their national character and potential regional particularities.
The objective of the proposed stream is to understand:
- how and with the help of what type of (innovative or traditional) actions the various policy makers implement strategies to address and overcome health inequalities;
- what type of inequalities do the different healthcare systems produce, how and through which mechanisms;
- are there specific common traits within existing healthcare systems, .e.g. those of the “Mediterranean model”? Do they still hold now that welfare reforms are changing their context?
- What has been the role of national and sub-national actors and of the European Union in the reform processes? What has been the socio-economic impact of the reforms? Did inequalities increase or decrease?
The stream intends to stimulate the presentation and discussion of papers related to peculiar features of health, health care services, systems and policies in various Health systems, preferably using a comparative approach (e.g. among Southern countries and/or vis à vis other EU member states, etc.). Different disciplinary perspectives are welcome.
